A Mayan calendar calculates Earth’s shift on its axis which happens every 26,000 years. It is assumed that they watched the date that the Pleaides rose above the horizon changing every year and after it disappeared completely, calculating when it would get back to its starting point.

This was done with incredible accuracy.
